Why is there lume on an Omega diver?

I was just staring at my lume last night and a thought occurred to me. Why do divers watches have so much lume? Surely if the water was dark, diving without some form of artificial light source such as a torch (flashlight) would be extremely dangerous. And if you have that light source, surely you could point it in the direction of the SMP or PO to check the time? Or is it just to check the time in the dark on terra firma?Any divers or experts offer any insight?........

Nice goldtone watch for everyday use. Black face with roman numerals looks classy. Links can be removed to fit wrist perly. Overall, good for the money.
