Pocket watch accuracy question
A bit of a vintage noob question.I am curious what is a reasonable expectation of the accuracy of vintage mechanical time pieces. I know that is a loaded question and it relies greatly on the quality and condition of the movement and what position they are in (crown up or down, crystal up or down, etc.). With my modern autos like ETA 2824-2, Miyota 9015 or even some of the inexpensive Chinese Seagull movements, I know all is right in the world if they are running + or -10 sec (most are in the 3-........
So why didn't Elgin (or did they?) have movements that displayed days or dates?
I know towards the end of their existence in Elgin, Illinois, Elgin had a few watches using Swiss movements with day and date displays (1965?). But that was extremely late to the party.I'm not an expert on this subject, and I'm not sure what Gruen or Hamilton had to offer in terms of day/date movements, but I know that Benrus, in the late 40's used a modified ETA 900 movement for their Calendar line of watches. So, why didn't they? Elgin was using some Swiss movements in the 50's. Why didn't ........
