When I was a teenager I liked black watches. However one time I saw a PVD black coated watch after some time of use and noticed that the coating had worn through showing in most edges the silver color of the metal. The other surfaces showed a greyish color coating indicating the wearing off of the black. Without trying to sound like a total NEWB, What is the best non invasive way to tell the difference between Stainless and Chrome-plated brass. I'm looking into some Russian watches and my research is telling me that what I'm looking at could be either.
