18k or 750

I was just wondering if someone here could tell me, how is it that on some all gold watches I see the stamps 18k and the 750. Then, on others, I see only the 750. I[s it possible the ones with only the 750 and no 18k are for the European market, or did they just forget to put the 18k stamp on it?........
