Can I repair watches?

Being that work has been slow I've been getting more active again in buying watches from garage sales, flea mkt'sWhat the chances of a novice like myself getting into minor servicing and repairs. It gets pretty costly taking them to jeweler all the time. Would a few books on tools and repairs be sufficient or should I leave it to the pros?........
