Jump starting a dead automatic.
To start, here's the watch we're talking about.It arrived in non-running condition but I do intend to keep it. It's not a rare or valuable vintage so I'd like to use it as a learning experience. I have managed to pop the crystal/bezel and run into my first issue. The crown stem goes through a hole in the case and the movement won't come out. How do you separate the crown from the movement to remove it from the case?Once it's out, I'll post photos of the movement and take further suggestions.........
So why didn't Elgin (or did they?) have movements that displayed days or dates?
I know towards the end of their existence in Elgin, Illinois, Elgin had a few watches using Swiss movements with day and date displays (1965?). But that was extremely late to the party.I'm not an expert on this subject, and I'm not sure what Gruen or Hamilton had to offer in terms of day/date movements, but I know that Benrus, in the late 40's used a modified ETA 900 movement for their Calendar line of watches. So, why didn't they? Elgin was using some Swiss movements in the 50's. Why didn't ........
