Changing the date on certain watches?

Hello, I'm a relative newbie to watches and have read in several places that on certain watches you shouldn't change the date between 9 - 3. So, I assume you just set the watch to some time outside of this time, say 6 - then proceed to change the date?Does this apply to all mechanical watches? Thanks in advance.Steve........
