crown and stem just came out

Hi, I have just pulled the crown out of my watch to adjust the time and the crown and attached stem came out of the watch. I assume a stem must be secured into the watch somehow but I have no idea how. I pushed it back in and it feels quite secure but would prefer to explore how to fix it properly.I would appreciate ideas please unless it is a job for a watchmaker. Thanks........
