Question about water resistance

This is something that I've been wondering about since I started collecting. How can two watches with two different crown types, one a screw down crown and the other a push/pull type crown, have the same WR rating? As I understand it a screw down crown has a small gasket or some kind of seal that is compressed when the crown is fully screwed down creating a barrier. What kind of seal does a push/pull crown use? Seems to me that if you can't get a compression seal of some kind then leakage is........
