New to Longines with a new watch picked up today

I'm new to Longines, but do have a few vintage watches of other brands. Today at an estate sale of a Lt. Col. RNA (whose pilots lic. was #10) I pickup up this:He was active during both WW and was a test pilot afterwards. Does anyone have any idea what the lever at the 6 o'clock position is used for? Any other comments would be appreciated.Barry........

Before buying this watch on , I did look at it in the store so I knew what I was buying. I like the two tone bracelet, love the diamonds. You can wear it as the everyday watch as well as for occasions and it does not require changing batteries.
