Monsters - old versus new?

Seiko Monsters (1st gen.) seem to be pretty affordable these days. Other than hacking and winding is there any quality difference between 1st and 2nd? How long do you have to shake a first generation to give it a good start for the day, assuming you have let it sit long enough to stop? I dont know much about this watch it was my grandpas believe maybe from the 70s? It is swiss made i dont know if it was very expensive or not maybe just a throw away but a pretty cool watch i call it the FATBOYi did find it sold new in 74 he paid 220 in todays money that equals $923.47sadly these did not hold valuei love it its comfortable and pretty cool looking........
