Day-Date Bracelet Question

Question for you guys. I recently purchased a new Day-Date and me thinks the bracelet is a wee bit too loose. I was thinking about trying to remove a link all by myself. My question is this, I am assuming gold is a soft metal, so is there a possibility I might booger up the screws on this if I don't use the proper screwdriver? I was very disappointed when I received this watch. I loved the style of it but thought that the bands were very cheaply made and did not think that the watch would hold up.
