• When were automatic watches first mass produced?

  I've developed an interest in watches from the 1930s, 40s and 50s (from watching old movies, corny I know). So I was wondering, when did affordable automatic watches become available to the public? Were the mechanical watches all replaced by automatics? Did the automatics take over the watch market or did most people stick with mechanical ("wind up") watches.
